Whatcom Co. Fire District 7, Station 3

  • Location: Ferndale, WA
  • Client: Whatcom County
  • Size: 9,915 SF

This project entailed remodeling and an addition to a previously unmanned volunteer fire station, turning it into a fully manned station serving the expanding residential areas of Ferndale, Washington. The existing building was a 3,450 square foot two-bay station with a small meeting/training room and kitchenette. Zervas added 6,465 square feet to this building and completely remodeled the existing.

The existing vehicle bays were lengthened to allow tandem parking of vehicles, and a third bay was added which allowed for a total of 6 vehicles. A second floor was added above the former meeting/training room as a dormitory space for up to 10 firefighters at any one time.

Adjacent to the second floor dormitory is an east facing dayroom with commanding views of Mount Baker across the adjoining farmlands. Separate locker facilities are provided for both men and women. The former meeting/training room has been remodeled to provide better lighting and audio/visual aids together with an expanded kitchen and separate dining area.
